The local court once again did not release Can Atalay despite the Constitutional Court’s ruling and sent the file to the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, which filed a criminal complaint against the members of the Constitutional Court.
Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court decided to send the file to the Court of Cassation to decide on Can Atalay, a member of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP), whose rights were violated for the second time by the Constitutional Court (AYM).
The lawyers of Can Atalay, who was elected Hatay MP while in prison and whose release was ordered by the Constitutional Court for the second time on December 21, had been waiting for the Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court panel to implement the release decision since 10:30 am.
Members of the Workers’ Party of Turkey protested in front of the Istanbul Courthouse, reacting to the lack of an announcement of the verdict for hours.
After the speech in the corridor of the courthouse, Erkan Baş came to the square in front of the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan and said in his speech here, “We are starting a sit-in protest by turning our backs to the palace of justice until this decision is made. We are expecting all political parties who stand for the law to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in the struggle for rights, law and justice, and all those who will not surrender this country to this dictatorship to join us in the sit-in.
TİP members gathered in Çağlayan Square and started the sit-in with their backs to the courthouse building.
