Customs duty on green lentil imports was zeroed.
The decision was published in the Official Gazette dated February 13, 2024.
According to the Presidential decision, zero customs duty on green lentils will be valid until June 30, 2024.
On the other hand, the export of green lentils, which is on the list of goods whose exports are subject to registration, was also restricted.
According to TurkStat data, Turkey’s green lentil production in the 2023 season increased by 11.1 percent to 50,000 tons, but 35,000 tons were imported as supply did not meet demand.
The Ministry of Trade announced that the customs duty on green lentil imports has been temporarily reduced to zero in order to ensure supply security for consumers and prevent price fluctuations.
“As the Ministry of Trade, product-based evaluations are made together with the relevant institutions in order to ensure domestic supply security and price stability, and necessary measures are taken quickly if necessary,” the Ministry said in a statement.
In this framework, taking into account trade data, production and market supply conditions and price movements, in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, it was emphasized that it was decided to temporarily zero the customs duty in order to ensure that the consumer need for green lentils, one of the basic food products, could be met at an affordable price, and it was noted that the necessary amendment was made to the Import Regime Decree and entered into force.
