The confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots is essential for us

In a joint press conference with the President of the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), Erodğan made the following statement: “Despite the efforts of the Turkish Cypriots, more than half a century has been wasted due to the uncompromising and maximalist approaches of the Greek Cypriot side. No one can tolerate losing another fifty years. The confirmation of the Turkish Cypriots’ inherent rights of sovereign equality and equal international status is indispensable for us.”

President Erdogan stated, “With the trust of our dear nation, I have undertaken the duty of serving my country for another five years as the President. Following the assumption of office, we continue the tradition by making our first international visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. From there, I will proceed to Azerbaijan, which is another step in our tradition. Tonight, I am in Azerbaijan, where we will conduct meetings and return to Ankara tomorrow.”

President Erdogan stated, “In the Cyprus issue, the Turkish side has always adopted a constructive and result-oriented approach.” He continued, “During our meetings with President Tatar, we thoroughly discussed all the issues on our agenda. Among them, ensuring the transfer of electricity from Turkey to Northern Cyprus through a cable will be our most important step. With this, there will no longer be power outages in Northern Cyprus. We evaluated the current situation regarding the Cyprus issue and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish side has always embraced a constructive and result-oriented attitude in the Cyprus issue. The just demands of the ancient and essential component of the island, the Turkish Cypriots, are clear and explicit. The Turkish Cypriots have never been, and will never be, a minority. Those who ignore these facts continue to console themselves with dreams of being the sole sovereign of the island. I advise these parties to abandon their obsessions and confront the realities of the island.”

The peace and security of our brothers and sisters on the island mean peace and security for us.

Despite the efforts of the Turkish Cypriots, more than half a century has been wasted due to the uncompromising and maximalist approaches of the Greek Cypriot side. No one can tolerate losing another fifty years. The confirmation of the Turkish Cypriots’ inherent rights of sovereign equality and equal international status is indispensable for us. If we are to return to the negotiation table, the path lies in recognizing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The realistic and result-oriented vision put forward by President Tatar in the recent unofficial meeting in Geneva, which we also support, essentially encompasses this.”

President Erdogan stated that they also discussed the Eastern Mediterranean dimension of the Cyprus issue with President Tatar. He said, “We will continue to staunchly defend the rights and interests of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In this regard, I would like to remind that the concrete proposals presented by the Turkish Cypriot side for the fair sharing of hydrocarbon resources in and around the island of Cyprus are still on the table. Unfortunately, my proposal for a regional conference on the issues concerning the Eastern Mediterranean did not receive a positive response.”
