Biology expert Prof. Dr. Haydar Öztaş and his wife Prof. Dr. Fulya Öztaş, who are fond of mountain hikes, did not think that they would discover a new plant species when they went on a nature hike one day.
They photographed the flower they saw for the first time and took the sample to a laboratory. After a detailed examination, the flower turned out to be a new species.
The flower is a plant with large bulbs, flat leaves, short stems, conical inflorescences and long stems.
The flower, which experts accepted as a new plant species as a result of literature comparisons, was named ‘oztasii’ (Leopoldia oztasii) in memory of Prof. Dr. Fulya and Haydar Öztaş for their contributions.
The study team, consisting of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Eroğlu and Assoc. Dr. Mesut Pınar from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and Prof. Dr. İsmail Eker from Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, examined the samples collected during the flowering and fruiting periods of the plant and concluded that the samples may belong to a new species.
The species was named ‘Konya morbasi’ in Turkish by the authors of the article.
