The European Union (EU) high-level official said that Turkey’s visa liberalization issue will be discussed in the autumn. The official stated, “We cannot predict the outcome of this discussion in advance. Turkey continues to be a candidate country and a key partner in many areas of common interest.”

According to the official sources of the European Union, a high-level EU official evaluated the steps that will be taken in the short term in Turkey’s EU membership process. The official stated, “Shortly after the elections, in June, the European Council invited the High Representative and the Commission to submit a report to the European Council on the course of EU-Turkey relations based on the instruments and options identified by the European Council. This report will be discussed in the autumn. As early as July, foreign ministers exchanged views on the need for the EU to re-engage with Turkey and build on common interests while trying to bridge the existing differences.”

The official, in response to the question about whether the captured positive atmosphere would lead to gaining momentum in full membership negotiations, stated, “Turkey continues to be a candidate country and a key partner in many areas of common interest. Upholding the fundamental freedoms and values defined in the European Convention on Human Rights, to which Turkey is a party, is essential for regaining momentum.”

Regarding the developments in the visa liberalization issue in the upcoming period, the official said, “The report submitted by the High Representative and the Commission to the European Council on the course of EU-Turkey relations will be discussed in the autumn. We cannot predict the outcome of this discussion in advance.”
